David – I had always wanted to write an epic song about David and Goliath. When my sons were young I used to tell them Bible stories often and this was one of the more popular story. I spent months working on the beginning which opens the “epic” atmosphere. The changes in the song keep it from getting repetitive and old. This was a fun song to play. Great message “Today, while it is today”. Always a harrowing thought. Time is short.
Run and hide,
Up from the valley,
The challenge fuels to fright,
Face and fight,
A champions folly,
Who can match the giant’s might.
Hopeless cries,
Close to the battle,
Huddled on the ground,
Shepherd boy,
Refusing to rattle,
Danger all around.
Blasphemies pierce like an arrow,
The heart of one so pure,
Sincerity,
So straight and narrow,
A child-like faith,
Tested and mature.
Simple stones,
Defenseless and daring,
No armor, sword or shield,
Ridicule,
Defensive and glaring,
Cowardice, fear and shame concealed.
Through the haze of soldiers stirring,
A defiant boy appeared,
As the giant shouted curses,
And the enemy laughed and jeered,
He stood amidst and clamor,
And called for all to hear,
I stand in the name,
Of the one true God.
The stone was smooth and balanced,
As he hurled it from his sling,
And the crunching of the flesh and bone,
Choked the giant’s scream,
David approached the fallen foe,
Raised the sword for all to see,
And left behind a headless shell,
With the spoils of victory,
Today, while it is today,
Will your courage falter, when it seems impossible,
Just stand, bolstered by His hand,
Feel His battle call and watch the giants fall.
